Nest defense, personality, and fitness of a locally endangered island passerine

چکیده

Personality, or repeatable variation in behavior, may impact an animal's survival reproduction. Parental aggression is one such personality trait with potentially direct implications for fitness, as it can improve offspring during vulnerable early life stages. We took advantage of a long-term nest box and fledgling monitoring project to explore the potential fitness consequences both repeatability parental breeding pairs locally endangered passerine species (Såli: Micronesian starling, Aplonis opaca) presence invasive predator, brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis), on island Guam. To do so, we tested associations between aggressive defense throughout nesting cycle three measures: hatching success, fledging post-fledging survival. Aggression varied greatly among was within (R = .47), providing evidence trait. Consistent investment theory, stage best predictor aggression, which increased age. positively correlated success egg stage, but not nestling propose that decoupled from because parents were unable defend young nocturnal, treesnakes. More broadly, our findings demonstrate traits necessarily confer benefits, particularly predators.

Local Individual Preferences for Nest Materials in a Passerine Bird

BACKGROUND Variation in the behavioural repertoire of animals is acquired by learning in a range of animal species. In nest-building birds, the assemblage of nest materials in an appropriate structure is often typical of a bird genus or species. Yet plasticity in the selection of nest materials may be beneficial because the nature and abundance of nest materials vary across habitats. Such plast...

Personality and reproductive fitness.

The relationship between reproductive success (number of biological children) and personality was explored in 1101 postmenopausal females from the Australian twin registry. The quadratic response surface relating fitness to extraversion (E) and neuroticism (N) showed a saddle point at intermediate levels of E and N. Selection was shown to be stabilizing, i.e., having an intermediate optimum, al...

Nest Defense- Grassland Bird Responses To Snakes

Predation is the primary source of nest mortality for most passerines; thus, behaviors to reduce the impacts of predation are frequently quantified to study learning, adaptation, and coevolution among predator and prey species. Video surveillance of nests has made it possible to examine real-time parental nest defense. During 1999-2009, we used video camera systems to monitor 518 nests of grass...

Impact of nest sanitation on the immune system of parents and nestlings in a passerine bird.

Bacterial communities are thought to have fundamental effects on the growth and development of nestling birds. The antigen exposure hypothesis suggests that, for both nestlings and adult birds, exposure to a diverse range of bacteria would select for stronger immune defences. However, there are relatively few studies that have tested the immune/bacterial relationships outside of domestic poultr...
